MushRoaming Summer News

Four months without an update does not mean there were no MushRoaming news, to the opposite! And as you can see in the form of this update I have moved from regular email with hand-pasting in your email address to an email service. The move was a very tedious procedure, but I expect that the worse is done and I really hope you like the result!

MushRoaming News
Back in spring, once all the Amazon and Colombia pictures had been ‘digested’, an incredible fire morel season was enjoyed here in Washington State as you can see from my new photo report. I just wish there was more clarity regarding taxonomy of fire morels, especially since I ended up being the co-author of one of these fire morel species: Morchella anthracophila Clowez & D.Winkler.
Also, I had the fortune to go truffle hunting with my friend Animal and his dog August. Furthermore, my constantly growing interest in truffles is leading to finally participating in the renowned and unique Oregon Truffle Festival that takes place in Eugene on Jan. 22 to 24, 2014. I am very excited that I will also lead a pre-festival culinary truffling tour.
Talking about January 2014, right after the Truffle Fest, Larry and I will conduct - man, that sounds a bit too formal! - our forth Amazon MushRoaming tour from February 2 to 15th. We will stick with our 2013 itinerary that was just awesome, not many experiences beat the pulsating life force of the Amazon rain forest!
As I am writing this I am getting ready for the MushRoaming Tibet Summer Tour. The three Tibetan drivers with their own four-wheel SUV are hired, the hotels finally reserved. We will tour Kham, the East Tibetan areas under Sichuan control. We will drive from Chengdu via Dartsendo (=Chin.: Kangding) and Garze (Ganzi) to Derge. There in Dzongsar we hope to meet a Tibetan doctor who is versed in mushrooms. The deeply-incised forested valleys of the Dri Chu (Yangtze) tributaries are also a major matsutake collection area. Right after the trip is the International Medicinal Mushroom Conference in Beijing. I have been to 3 previous IMMCs, my research specialty Tibetan Caterpillar Fungus (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) figures big at these conferences. I am there to make the case for sustainable management. Luckily I have just been invited as co-convener and to give a plenary speech. Very nice, especially since I sacrificed my Telluride Mushroom Festival participation to further sustainable Cordyceps management meeting lots of Chinese Cordyceps experts with whom I can share my ideas, as I learned today, on my birthday.

The high point of the upcoming fall season will be our PSMS mushroom show on October 12 & 13 and the Breitenbush Mushroom Conference in Oregon (Oct. 17-19), my absolute favorite spot for a long mushroom weekend, where mushroom-laden Pacific Northwest old-growth forest meet stunning hot springs while being taken care of a great, super-earthy crew. Also in October I will do a presentation on Tibetan wild flowers in Seattle.

Moreover, often I share pictures from Mushraoming trips and other outings on Facebook. And by the way, “Mushroaming” is now trademarked, just after having it for 5 years on the ever longer to-do-list.

Upcoming MushRoaming Tours
Andean Amazon Bolivia: Feb. 2-15
Together with Larry Evans we will meet in La Paz on the Altiplano and travel crossing the Andes via Coroico, a sleepy small-town perched on a ridge, located in the Yungas, down to Rurrenabaque, the gate to Madidi National Park, one of the most bio-diverse spots on the globe. We will spend 10 days in the amazing Amazon region to explore flora, fauna and funga. Though we have led two journeys there – and we love to visit new places – we are so in awe of this incredible patch of pristine rain forest that we decided to go back to Madidi again. Early Bird special is available if signing up before Sept. 1st. Checkout all the photo galleries on Bolivia 2013 and 2012.

Colombia Tour: tentatively March 30 to April 12, 2014
We will meet in Bogotá, the Colombian Andes metropolis. We will stay in an eco-lodge in the mountain oak-forests that are rich in familiar chanterelles and exotic tropical mushrooms. We are still looking into a specific high mountain destination for a couple of days there after. Next major destination will be via beautiful Medellin, also known as "Capital de las Orquídeas" (Orchid Capital), the Pacific coast, where white beaches meet pristine tropical rain forests. Here we will spend around 5 days before returning to Medellin or Bogotá. More details in September.

Cordyceps Expedition: May 24 to June 5, 2014
We will explore the alpine Cordyceps habitat around Ganzi in the gorgeous Kham region of East Tibet / West Sichuan, where the valleys are in full bloom at this time. Every Tibetan that can walk is up on the high pastures in camps looking for Yartsa gunbu. They are busy in the afternoons with yartsa dealing. In the mountain forests morels abound under towering glaciated mountains. We will have plenty of opportunity to explore Kham's rich cultural heritage in form of temples and other sacred sites. Lots of hot springs await. A report from the Cordyceps expedition visiting Kham is posted online.

Summer Fungal & Floral Foray Tibet – 2 weeks late July 2014
We meet in Chengdu, Sichuan and will travel further eastward exploring the gorgeous forested region of Kham (2012 Photo gallery) or Kongpo (photo report). We will cross several passes around 4500m / 14,700ft enjoying stunning vistas and an amazing alpine flora. Local Tibetans will guide has hunting for matsutake and other edible mushrooms. Detailed photo reports and itineraries including plants and mushrooms encountered of previous summer tours are already online.

Truffle Fest & Culinary Oregon Tour Jan 22-24:
In cooperation with the Oregon Truffle Festival (Jan 24-26) I am offering a pre-festival Wine & Dine & Truffling Time Tour in Oregon’s wine country I will guide. The details are still being worked out, but that much we know: We will meet on Wednesday evening for dinner in Portland OR. Thursday in the morning we will have hunt Oregon white truffle (Tuber gibbosum) assisted by a trained a truffle dog and then visit an outstanding winery for a vine tasting. Dinner will be at one of Oregon’s foremost mushroom restaurants featuring truffles and other mushrooms. The night will be spending in wine country. Friday morning we will be hunting for Oregon black truffles (Leucangium carthusianum) and driving to Eugene, where in the afternoon the Truffle festival will start.

New Web-page content

This spring and early summer have been just awesome in the Pacific Northwest. Not only very sunny and warm weather, but also enough rain to guarantee an incredible morel harvest on the extensive burns that occurred last summer. What a bonanza! I have uploaded a 20+ photo report from my 4 morel hunts around Table Mountain, Washington.

Truffle hunt with Animal & August, the truffle dog, in search of Oregon Black truffle in Western Washington’s Douglas fir forests.

The MushRoaming Bolivia 2013 photo gallery has now 108 images with subtitles. The Cordyceps pages from Bolivia and Colombia have been finished with over 20 different Cordyceps species on display, many of them with several macro-shots, enjoy!

That much for this time, looking forward to hearing from you
Be well,
Daniel
